Your host and hostess
We are Yvo and Bonny Moonen, and since 2021 we've been running Place de la Famille. Together with our four children, Aurely, Remy, Sophie and Emily, we set off on the great adventure. Twenty years ago we met each other at the Hoge Hotelschool in Maastricht, and ever since then it has been our shared dream to start a hotel, campsite or holiday park in France. Place de la Famille became our turn-off.
Our story
Perhaps it sounds familiar: once you've stepped onto the express train of climbing the career ladder, it becomes ever harder to take that turn-off you so badly wanted to take.
In the summer of 2020, we started talking about Place de la Famille. After a few Skype sessions, we went to take a look in September, Bonny waddling across the grounds with a big pregnant belly, and we instantly fell in love with this special place. It wasn't just the location, but the whole concept in which relaxing, meeting and discovering matter so much. We knew it: this is our turn-off.
On 8 February 2021, we set off from Zandvoort, in a mountain of snow they hadn't seen there in decades, with a car full of children and an overloaded roof box. Because of the curfew, we had to be indoors somewhere before 18:00: a hotel near Charles de Gaulle with no food. For the first week, we all slept on mattresses on the floor, with a little wood stove beside us. A bit of camping!
In the summer we live in the house on-site ourselves, and every winter we tackle projects, big and small. In 2023, a proper charging point went in on the car park, we had drone footage and a 360° tour made, and we built a mini climbing forest with a zip line on the edge of the woods. In 2024, we placed a new Safari Lodge Prestige on Sud field, tent 14, built entirely ourselves from the decking right through to the interior.
