Beynac: the château and the houses against the rock on the Dordogne

The area

Villages of yellow natural stone

Salignac is 8 kilometres away, with a supermarket, baker, butcher and a shop selling local produce. Saint-Géniès (15 km) is a tiny village of golden stone with a Sunday market, Terrasson (20 km) climbs up the hillside in terraces, and Sarlat (25 km) has a market hall in an old church and street performers in the alleyways.

Landscape

Forests, walnuts and rivers

Rolling countryside surrounds the glamping site: woodlands, walnut groves and meadows dotted with cows. Further on, the Dordogne and the Vézère wind through the valley, with pebbly little beaches for paddling, canoes drifting by and castles perched high on the cliffs. The Tamniès swimming lake is 20 kilometres away.

Climate

Sunny, but not too hot

In May and June, the weather here is generally lovely: not cold and certainly not too hot, with everything coming into bloom. The summers are warm; on a really hot day, a cave with a constant temperature of 13 degrees is a welcome relief, and the heated swimming pool is open from the beginning of May until October.

Culture & activities

Knights, prehistory and markets

The Château de Castelnaud, the hanging gardens of Marqueyssac, the cave paintings of Lascaux and the pilgrimage site of Rocamadour are all within an hour's reach. In July and August, there are food markets with long tables and live music in Saint-Géniès and Salignac, and at the markets you can buy walnut oil, pâté and strawberries.
